(Kingsborough, NY) The Tigers traveled to their home field in Brooklyn to face Nassau Community College this past Sunday. After suffering a loss against the Lions in their last game, the Tigers took the field with determination to get a win.
The game started out very even, the tiger's defense was under pressure from the Nassau attack, but it was the Tiger's midfield, led by
Tabitha Sloane, and
Halie Retterath, that allowed the Tiger's to quickly transition against the opponents back line with the help of the forwards Katie Rieker and
Chloe Strickland. Â Our defensive line, consisting
Christina Schumchyk,
Claire Anvelt,
Hunter Wellford, and newcomer Gabby Attanasio held strong against Nassau containing them for most of the first half, with senior captain
Stephanie Roberts making critical saves behind them. Later in the half, however, the Tigers became more defensive while the Sharks began applying heavy pressure and taking shots outside of the 18 yard box. Although the Tigers played their best half of the year, the constant pressure from the Lions caused the Tiger's to fall behind a goal just before the end of the first half.Â
In the second half, the Tigers came out determined to win back the half. Midfielders, Katie Amato and Katie Prince worked hard on the outsides of the field carrying the ball with pace to  from the defense to the forwards.  Unfortunately after several breaks through the midfield the Tigers were unable to capitalize. Nassau however found the back of the net after a scramble in the box after a corner kick, making the game 2-0. The Tigers began to feel defeated, losing their determination they started the game with, which allowed the Lions to capitalize and score another 3 goals making the final score 3-0.Â
"The Tigers continue to grow as a team and get better every week" Coach Bevivino states after the game. Their next game will be Saturday October 8th vs. Suffolk Community College at the Tiger's home field at Kingsborough Brooklyn. Â
(Manhattan, NY) Â Monday the Tigers traveled down the west side highway to take on local team BMCC. Â The game was to be played at the local Pier 40 fields. Â This has been a lucky place for the tigers. Â Never in 5 years have the tigers lost to the panthers at Pier 40, and on this day that record continued.
The BMCC team came out strong, pressing the attack against the Tigers. Â After a very physically demanding game the day before, the FIT team was a bit sluggish and slow on the ball. Â However, the 15 minute mark hit and the Tigers were back in control of the game. Â Ball control and passing through the midfield was the undoing for the Panthers. Â FIT began moving the ball well around the field making the panthers chase the play, allowing the tigers to find the games. Â Freshman
Chloe Strickland received a ball to her feet which allowed her to turn and find Senior Captain
Katelyn Prinz sprinting down the right side where after two touches she blasted a shot over the top of the Panther's GK. Â This was Strickland and Prinz's first points of the season.
Late in the first half Freshman Katie Reicker, was on a break away in the box and was taken out by two defenders. Â With no clear intent to play the ball a PK should have been awarded. Â But no call was made, this was where the game started to get out of the referee's control. Â Fouls started to pile up and unsafe challenges from the panthers we constantly going uncalled.
"they have a responsibility to keep our players safe out there, today they failing to do that job." Coach Bevivino was overhear during his half time speech.
The second half started and right from the whistle, the tigers took control of the ball and stayed there. Â 8 minutes into the second half Captain Katie found the net again. Â The women of FIT pressed the Panthers defense and made it an easy day for Captain
Stephanie Roberts. Â Recording her second shut out of the year, the defense of
Christina Schumchyk,
Claire Anvelt,
Hunter Wellford, and Gabrielle Attanasio, held the BMCC team to only 3 shots on goal. Â
"Our team was really clicking today, Halie and Tab really did a great job, the three Katie's put in a lot of mileage today (Katie Reicker, Katie, Amato,
Katelyn Prinz) and moved the ball better than they have all year.  I am really happy with how my girls played…  The officiating was a mess though, inconsistent and out of control, we had players getting hurt out there because he had no control of the game.  My number one priority for my team, is their safety.  This is not acceptable at this level." Bevivino commented after the game.
The Tigers have another tough weekend coming up. Â They take on #2 in the region Suffolk on Saturday and host the BMCC panthers on Sunday during their Breast Cancer Awareness game. Â If you come don't forget to wear your Pink!
