Q.
What should I do if I am interested in joining a sport?
Your first step would be to fill out the
prospective student-athlete form. After filling out the form, a coach or Athletic Department staff member will reach out to you. Coaching staff members can also be
contacted diretcly with specific inquiries.
Q.
When are tryouts for each sport?
Late August: Cross County, Soccer, Volleyball
Early September: Dance Company, Swimming
Late January: Track & Field
Specific details about tryouts and info sessions are announced
online and
@FITathletics IG a few weeks prior to the start of each semester.
Q.
When and where are practices and competitions held for each sport?
Great question! It is important for student-athletes to register for classes that leave time for athletic commitments.
Contact a coach for more specific information.
Checking out recent athletic team schedules is also a good way to get a general idea about which teams we compete against and when / where competitions take place.
Q. What division does FIT compete in?
FIT is a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XV Division III institution.
Q. Does FIT offer athletic scholarships?
FIT is an NJCAA Division III member institution so we do not offer athletic aid. However, as part of the SUNY system we are a state college so many students and their families find FIT an affordable option for a high quality education in our specialized schools of Fashion and Business. Please check out the FIT Financial Aid website or Financial Aid FAQ's for information about other types of aid and scholarships that are available to students.
Q. How many credits must I be enrolled in to compete in a sport?
NJCAA student-athletes must be enrolled full time (12 or more credits) and maintain full time student status throughout the entire sport season. A student-athlete who withdraws below full time status will immediately be removed from their team for the remainder of the season.
However, it is highly recommended that student-athletes register for at least 15 credits each semester which gives a margin of error to maintain academic progress, or atheltic eligibility should a student-athlete withdraw from or fail a particular class.
Q. What are the basics of maintaining academic eligibility?
The general student-athlete academic progress requirement is 12 completed credits each semester at a minimum 2.0 GPA
Q. How many years can I compete in a sport at FIT?
NJCAA student-athletes can compete for only two seasons in each sport. Transfer students may join an FIT team if they have participated for one season or less at their prior college.
Q. If I can only compete for two years, which two years are best?
Student-athletes may compete ANY of the 2 years that they are eligible at FIT. We recommend student-athletes compete during their first two years at FIT as course workload and internship demands increase as students progress academically.
Q. If I compete in two years of one sport can I compete in another sport afterwards?
Yes! As long as you meet NJCAA eligibility requirements, you may compete in more than one sport either in the same or separate academic years.
Q. Should I wait a year and get used to FIT before I join a sport?
This is a common question for incoming FIT student-athletes. We encourage interested student-athletes to get involved with a team immediately upon entering. Having a network of teammates and coaches is a great asset in helping new students adjust to FIT and achieve success in the classroom and in their sport! Also, we have found that students who postpone athletic involvement to focus on academics in their first year at FIT often don’t come back to the sport and then express regret, wishing they competed in college.
Q. Where on campus are the Athletics & Recreation Facilities located?
The Athletics & Recreation Facilities are located in the Dubinsky Student Center (building closest to 8th Ave.) on the sub-basement level.
Q. What type of athletic facilities are available on campus?
FIT has main and auxiliary gyms, a dance studio, yoga studio, spin room, and two fitness centers.
