Box Score 3 (Manhattan, NY) This past weekend the FIT Tigers competed in their second tournament of the 2015 season at BMCC. The Tigers were very anxious to get back on the court to prove that they are a team of persistence and perseverance. Even the spectators could feel the team cohesiveness in the stands. The Tigers were there to win and they weren't going down without a fight.
The first match was against Bronx Community College. The Tigers started out strong and confident. Perfect passes were executed and they came out on top, winning 25:14.
The second set was a breeze, capturing the win at 25:8. Going into the third set the Tigers let their guard down a little bit, and a few minor serving errors later, they found BCC right on their heels. They were not able to recover in time and fell, 23:25.
If you asked fans in the stands, they would testify that you could feel in the air that the Tigers were not happy about their third set loss. Middle blocker
Taj Cutting and
Cassandra Burdick were the MVPs of the game leading the team to a victory of 25:11. Cutting pummeled 10 kills, while Burdick had 34 assists! Way to go, ladies!
With a very short break, the Tigers were on to the next victim. Their opponents in this match was Hostos. From early on the Tigers took the lead. With team work and constant communication on the court - FIT snagged a win in all 3 sets! The following are the final scores: 25:17, 25:15 and 25:20.
Jenna Dickey recorded 18 amazing kills, and
Cassandra Burdick was back again with 30 assists.
The third and final game of the BMCC tournament was played against Queensborough. The Tigers had battled through many games, but even behind the layer of sweat on their faces, you could still see the determination in their eyes. Excellent team work and few technical errors resulted in winning all 3 sets; 25:19, 25:12 and 25 :19. Venessa Benish posted 5 kills, while
Julia Corbett drilled 6. What a win for the Tigers!
To say the least, it was an excellent tournament, where the Tigers showed that they can hang with the big dogs. They proved that they can compete under major pressures as well. I'm sure after the wins this weekend, we will all be keeping our eyes peeled for the next game that will be at BMCC again, on Thursday September 17.
