Women's Soccer partnered with the New York City chapter of the Alzheimer's Association to host the first annual FIT Cup. The goal of the FIT Cup is to partner with amazing organizations annually to help bring awareness, visibility, and support for important causes. Head coach Hatem Gabr arranged the eventful day, along with the support of team captains, dedicated fans, friends, and family of the Tigers. With cooler weather approaching, the Tigers looked ahead to an exciting match up for a great cause
Kicking off at noon, the Tigers faced the Nassau Lions on their home field. The first half started with the Tigers eager as always to notch the first goal. Nine minutes in they were able to do just that, with FIT's number 24, Alexis Kufta assisting number 25, Massai Salazar. This was just the beginning for the Tigers, as the half would result in five additional goals with Kufta and Salazar connecting again for the second goal. The third goal would come from yet another pass from Kufta, to senior captain Grace Cooper, who then found the net. In the fortieth minute of the game, freshman Angelina Schretzmayer was in great positioning to fight for a rebound off a goalkeeper punt, then passing to Salazar again for their hat trick goal. Freshman Adaeze Udalla would notch the fifth goal with a great assist from center defender Emma Rathburn. The sixth and final goal of the game would come from senior Michelle Muratore off a great ball played in by senior captain Ivelisse Vargas in the forty-fifth minute of the game.
The Tigers took to the second half to work on ball control and keeping the chemistry of the game. They dominated possession, and worked the ball through all areas of the field, connecting pass after pass. With beautiful balls played through the defensive line, ahead to the midfielders and thus to the forwards, it was truly a game of skill and entertainment. Senior captain goalkeeper Josie Whitt would finish the game with another shut out, making numerous saves throughout the game.
Not only was this game played for the FIT Cup, it was also the Tigers' Senior Day. After the game finished, awards were presented to all, and the Tigers celebrated those playing their last season with the team. All eleven seniors aided in not only this win, but also empowering each and every player to play with passion and heart. The coaches held a bittersweet celebration, excited for what's to come, but still wishing each and every senior could continue to play after this season ends.
The post-game celebration was elaborately laid out in the parking lot, with all the fans, friends, and family offering a shmorgishborg of foods and treats. Liz Pierson and Jason Wedge from the Alzheimer's Association also joined the festivities by offering information and gaining support for their organization throughout the game and post-game celebration. They look forward to a walk in NYC this Saturday, October 21st in support of the organization. The Tigers look ahead to what the rest of the season holds, with their eyes on playoffs which will also begin this Saturday, October 21st at 12pm when the Tigers host the Lions of Nassau Community College on their home turf at Kingsborough Community College located in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. We hope to see you all there. GO TIGERS!!
