(Corning, NY) Today's game was the first time the freshman and senior Tigers took the field together in a game this season. They travelled upstate and took on the Corning Red Barons for a non-region game. Even with the forcast of thunder storms looming in the distance the tigers took the field to show the Coach Bevivino what they could do. The team only started playing together 4 days prior to this game, and were eager to see how well they meshed together on a full field.
Our strong defensive line, led by seniors Lauren Fremgem and Rose Witherell and flanked by senior
Karina Demirciyan and freshman
Meagan Hilton, were able to shut down many of Cornings offensive attacks. However, With a good shot from one of Cornings offensive players, the ball dropped in just over goalie
Samantha Berger, who came out strong and made some incredible saves throughout the day. Including her save on a breakaway, that unfortunately ricocheted back out into centerfield where the red barons were able to capitalize and finish. Late in the first half, Corning received a penalty kick, which they did not convert, keeping the score at 2-0 going into halftime.
During the second half, the Tiger midfielders had great movement on the field. With senior
Stephanie Dootz and freshman
Juliana Liberatore at center midfield, they were able to move the ball well from side to side and up from our defensive end. Flanked by
Megan Schroeder and
Stephanie Roberts. Filling in for Juliana was Jacqueline Balgelman, who was able to feed great passes to our forwards
Kirsten Henning and
Katelyn Prinz, who were making good runs followed by great shots on goal. Unfortunately, despite our great movement of the ball and strong defense, the red barons were able to attain another 3 goals during the second half.
All in all it was a good game and the Tigers put up a good fight against the Corning red barons, but the red barons were able to capitalize well on finishing, and we were facing a few injuries as well. At the end of the game, head coach DJ Bevivino left off on a positive note saying "We played well today, some injuries set us back, but I think the opportunity to see a full sized field prior to our regional match up this coming weekend really helped us. Freshman goalie Sam Berger did a great job today protecting the net and our seniors really stepped up and helped the new players into the collegiate level. I am disappointed with the result, but with the level of play I saw on the field today I think we have a much better idea of where we need to focus our preparations for this coming week. The Tigers old and new all did well and I still feel positive about what's to come".
The Tigers look forward to the next game which will be Saturday September 5, away against Nassau CC, at 1:00.
