Goal from Shroeder Helps the Tigers Tie the Lions

(Garden City, New York) The Tigers ventured over to Nassau Community College, for their second face off of the season. Previously, the Tigers fell to the Lions 3-0. But it was a beautiful day on the field, and even with a strong wind coming from the east, the Tigers weren't about to let these Lions roar in their direction anymore.

Starting off the first half senior veterans Karina Demirciyan and Stephanie Dootz took center field. They worked with teammate and new comer Juliana Liberatore to really dominate anything that rolled past mid field. Our defensive line consisted of Rosie Witherell, Lauren Fremgem, Maegan Hilton, and Emily Sheehan. This pack united together and denied 90% of shots taken on goal. Although FIT denied shots on goal, the forwards just couldn't quite find the back of the net, and closed out the first half with a couple of goose eggs, 0-0.

The Tigers knew that persistence and consistency was key to wearing down the Lions in the second half. Midfielders, Monica Guerrero and Megan Shroeder, successfully feed balls up to forward Kirsten Henning, who was making plays all game. On a quick break down field, Henning faced pressure from Nassau defenders. Quick on her feet she was able to shoot the ball across field to Shroeder. Shroeder forced down the field, planted just outside the goal box, and soared the ball into the corner of the net, putting the Tigers up 1-0!

Nassau was hardly amused, lagging by one. They took out their daggers and gave the Tigers a run for their money. It was in the last 60 seconds of the game, that the Lions slipped past the Tigers iron defense and tied the game 1 all.

The Tigers went into 20 minutes of Overtime Golden Goal, ultimately Sudden Death. There were many close shots from both teams, but in the end neither team was able to find a goal, recording the final score as a tie of 1-1.

Assistant Coach Briana Marquit commented that "the girls played really well today. They were able to take what we worked on in practice this week, and display it in the game. All of these women are coachable, and that skill will lead us to the tournament."

You can catch the Tigers next in action at Kingsborough Community College on October, 10th. Don't miss the action!
