(New York, NY) On Thursday night, the Tigers beat the Broncos in straight sets during their home opener.
The tigers got out to a great start, scoring the first 7 points on their first sever, freshman
Erin Dee. After riding the momentum to a sizeable lead, the freshman came back to serve and finish off the set, 25-12. Of the 15 attempts in the first set, Erin served up an incredible 8 aces.
As the match progressed, Bronx grew closer each time, scoring 18 points in the second and 19 points in the third set during which the Broncos built an early lead.
Despite winning fairly easily, the Tigers did not play with the enthusiasm expected of a team playing in front of their home crowd for the first time this season. The Tigers struggled to get the offense going with efficiency and it showed in the results. As the match progressed, Bronx started to adjust to FIT's attack coming up with key blocks and digs when they needed them most. Bronx also played well offensively, utilizing the deep corners effectively.
Overall, it was a good night for the Tigers, because while taking the win, they realize what is important to improve moving forward into a big double dual match this Saturday vs Rockland and Westchester who are right in the middle of the regional pack along with FIT.
"As we get closer to the playoffs, we need to sharpen up. We will take the win, but no one left feeling very proud of how we played. We need to stay loose, have fun out there and play the way we are capable of. I think with having our co-captain Cassie (
Cassandra Burdick) back in the mix on Saturday, we will be back on track," said head coach
Keith Heron.
