(Bronx, NY) This past weekend the FIT Tigers took their competition to the next level serving it up at the Monroe College Tournament. The Tigers were ready to see how they measured up against the stiff competition, and add a few more wins to their tally.
The first match was against Nassau Community College. Setting the tone in this first game was crucial to the success of the rest of the tournament. The Tigers started out strong and confident. The first 2 sets the Tigers had consistent passes, quality digs, and lazer cutting serves. They came out with two wins (25,11) and (25,12).Â
The third set didn't go as smoothly as the first two. FIT had a few minor errors with passing and it cost them a set, losing (25,12). In the final game against NCC, the team was able to channeled the energy they had in the first two games, leading them to a victory of (25,22). The final score left the Tigers 3:1 for the day.
Julia Corbett lead the team with 9 kills, and 5 aces while serving.
Cassandra Burdick also stepped up for the team totaling 39 assists.
Going into the second game, one of the top ranked teams in the tournament, Northern Virginia Community College, was eagerly awaiting to play the Tigers. FIT started out bringing the heat, snatching the first set right out from under NVCC's noses winning (25,18). The second set started out strong, but didn't end well for the Tigers, as they fell short by only 4 points. The final score was (25,21).
On to the third set, the Tigers found themselves in a nail biting point by point rally, and took the very close win of (25,23). The final score was again 3:1 for the Lady Tigers. The leaders of these matches were
Jenna Dickey with 17 excellent kills, Venessa Bennish totaling 5 serving aces, and Hannah Edwards with 25 incredible digs.Â
It was an excellent first day tournament and the team is ecstatic to get back on the court tomorrow, as they face a full day of stiff competition.
