(New York, NY) The Tigers may not have had classes today but they showed up ready to do some work. Playing at Pier 40 the FIT Women's Soccer team were treated like this was a home game playing only right down the West Side Highway. Students, friends and Family all showed up to watch the girls capture their first win of the season against the BMCC Panthers.
The ladies took the field ready to go scoring the first goal in 1:28!! Kirsten Henning was able to net a loose ball inside of the six to put the tigers on the boards. "Once we had that first goal the team had a new type of confidence, which could be seen all over the field," said Assistant Coach Briana Marquit. The scoring didn't stop there. The tigers were able to capitalize on 3 set plays, Hunter Wellford, Stephanie Dootz, dominated in the air, heading in two crosses from Senior Lauren Fremgen. Fremgen not to be out done, volleyed her own goal in late in the first half to add to her 3 assists on the day.
Henning who has been in a drought these past couple of games found a renewed confidence in her foot, scoring 3 goals, 2 in the first and one in the 2nd half. Rosie Witherell Finished the end of the match with a brilliant free kick that dropped in above the outstretched hands of the BMCC keeper. True credit goes to the defense. They were pulling double duty, Fremgen had a goal and 3 assists, Witherell had a goal and Senior Karina Demirciyan, had the first assist of the day. "When the defense is up the field supporting the offense and getting points, you know the team is doing well and playing together," said Assisitant Coach Carrie Godas.
Stepping in for Freshman goalie Samantha Berger, Stephanie Roberts took the reins manning the back line for the tigers defense. Starting for the first time this season Roberts, earn herself a clean sheet and did well to keep any near the goal out.
After the match Head Coach David Bevivino had this to say "I think we played well, obviously I am happy to get the first win, we've had a few issues the first few games that we really needed to work out. Our offense has been a little slow and not as productive, but today I saw a whole new side to them, the shots looked great, the passing was on point, and I am really happy with how well they did. Today we won as a team, the ball was moved around well most of the goals were assisted, and everyone got minutes on the field. Also, when the defense can add to the scoreboard, you know the team is doing well. We were missing our starting keeper, but I knew Steph was up to the job, she got us our first clean sheet, that is always something to celebrate. I think todays game was exactly what we needed before this weekend, we are heading upstate to take on NCCC, then back down to take on Howard CC which will be a tough game*."
The tigers have a long road trip upstate to take on North Country Community College on Saturday at 11 am, then back home to play their first home game against nationally ranked Howard CC at 2pm.
*as of the time of this article Howard CC is currently ranked 11th in the NJCAA
