Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Brittany Harris

FIT Tigers Win Monroe Tournament Silver Championship

(Bronx, NY) The FIT Women's Volleyball team finished the month of September by playing in the Monroe Tournament over the course of the months' final three days.  The Tigers opened the tournament on the 28th, falling to the College of Southern Maryland 2-3 (20-25, 25-22, 25-29, 21-25, 7-15) and then Monroe later in the evening 3-0 (9-25, 9-25, 14-25).  The Tigers roared back though, winning their final three matches against Bergen CC (3-2; 25-15, 25-19, 18-25, 12-25, 15-13), Nassau CC (3-1; 25-18, 15-25, 25-14, 25-22) and Nassau again in the Silver Championship 3-1 (25-14, 18-25, 25-22, 25-22).  The Tigers' record moved to 10-2 after the tournament.

After the fist night, Coach Thomas noted, "We ran into some very tough teams on Friday.  Both teams we were up against were Division II schools.  We played Southern Maryland very tough."

The following day, the Tigers picked themselves up and took care of Bergen CC and Nassau CC.  Coach Thomas was thrilled when the team was able to bounce back from their two losses the previous day to pick up very important wins on Saturday morning.  With a tournament record of 2-2, the Tigers earned a spot in the Silver Championship game Sunday morning.  There, they met Nassau CC once again, and in similar fashion, took that game 3-1 as well.  The team stayed focused for the match and used the two early tournament losses to get them motivated.

"Going into the last match of the tournament against Nassau we knew, as a team, we had to keep up the momentum from the previous day and stay focused.  We came out in the first game with a lot of intensity.  Our passing was on, which allowed us to run our quick offense which is our biggest strength.  Everyone stepped up offensively and defensively throughout the match.  We truly played with our hearts," said Rachel Carey, #14.

Over the course of the tournament, Carey had 35 kills and 38 digs, while her teammate Lauren Curley had an impressive 124 set assists, 22 service aces, and 38 digs.  Megan Houff had 60 great kills, 11 service aces and 12 blocked shots.  Sarah Weise added 20 kills and 7 blocks, Sarah Grochowski had 80 digs, Vivian Htam added 14 kills and 60 digs, while Breanna Dolan added 25 kills, 41 digs, and 6.5 blocked shots.
